"Age of the Geek, Baby"

Back when I was in elementary, they rolled out new standards for reading. Every day students had to sit quietly and read for twenty minutes.

I was the student who already had their book out on their desk. I was the kid who would get in trouble for reading when the teacher lectured. I was that kid who practically skipped into the school library and the library was Cheers because everyone knew my name.

Hi, my name is Melissa Blue and I'm a word nerd. I know words that I can't pronounce because I've only read them. I can spell obscure words like a champ. I am that geek in the family who is at every family function with a book just in case.

I also love Harry Potter, and one day I'm totally going to dress up like Bellatrix for Halloween. Bow ties are cool. I don't believe in hiding under your covers when you're scared. I think you should fill a shot gun with rock salt and put a devil's trap underneath your bed. Time can be traversed with a DeLorean. I own a ton of shoes and some carry epic level status that can ward off even the scariest boss. I can kill you with the power of my mind. And if that doesn't work, I have a Scooby Doo gang that can research ways to put you down.

I am a geek. So it's only natural that I write a series that features geeks. Yet, I told myself I probably shouldn't. Taking on fandoms and the people in them was asking for trouble. What if I got the Batman cannon wrong? Or misquoted something in the Whedonverse? (Come on. Have you seen a mob of angry geeks? They are vicious. Let's ignore the fact that I am sometimes one of them.) What if I talked about leveling an Alliance Druid and got back nothing but blank stares? What if no one bought into the idea that a guy who wears glasses and loves defunct Sci-Fi shows is a hottie who is a dirty, dirty beast in bed?

Then I remembered the first rule of writing. Write what you know.

And I know what's it's like to feel like I'm on the fringes. I know exactly how it feels to make some obscure joke and lo and behold people laugh. I know exactly how gratifying it is to wave my geek flag and find people who feel the exact same way.

They were the kid who couldn't wait to read twenty minutes a day in class.

They read during the teacher's lecture.

The school librarian knew their name.

It's the age of the geek, baby.

So, look out for TO ONE HUNDRED. It'll come out Jan. 7th. The follow up (DOWN TO ASH) will hit in March. 2016 will be the year of the geek. I'm calling it.

When they met online they were equals...Then she walks into his classroom.

For four months Eva March shared almost every secret with a handsome stranger. It was easy when she didn't have to meet his gaze in real life. The online flirtation was fun. She could be a strong, put-together woman without a sordid past. Most importantly, he'd never know the truth.

Grady Addison takes his job as a professor seriously. He doesn't sleep with co-eds, much less his students. Eva doesn't even fit his leggy, peppy blonde requirements, but he can't walk away now. He's spent too much time fantasizing about her, her smile and the way her eyes darken when she thinks of her past.

And her past is a problem. The secrets she hasn't yet told him could end his career and for Eva, her life could just come crashing down...again.

Let's Talk Kink

I love that title because it feels like I'm about to talk to you in a school-special kind of way. I'm not. I hope. But let's start with the bottom basics and use the Merriam-Webster's definition:

kink
6 : unconventional sexual taste or behavior

I love this definition because it uses the word unconventional. It's not dating itself. Prior to Fifty Shades of Grey most folks wouldn't know what a flogger was. Some folks might even use a flogger now in their bedroom. Some folks still don't and that's okay, because this definition covers it. Kink is something that sexually arouses you that you probably wouldn't admit to in polite circles. That's it. That's kink.

Of course that's not the end of the post.

Why are we talking about this? Well...this is like lube before I unleash KILTED FOR PLEASURE out into the world. I didn't give you any with UNDER HIS KILT and HER INSATIABLE SCOT. I was totally remiss in that. My Under The Kilt series, at least when it deals with sex, is all about exploration and limitations, especially through the heroine's POV. Jocelyn had never experienced the kind of sex that strips you down to your most basic and primitive self. She had candles and flowers and soft music kind of sex. Keri couldn't relax enough to really, really enjoy flesh meeting flesh. She knew what she wanted but was too shy to ask for it. Victoria, the newest heroine, is savvy. (Or believes herself to be but she hasn't met a Baird yet.) She has explored. She isn't afraid to ask for what she wants. So where does that leave her on the spectrum I've set up for myself and you readers?

Let's backtrack a little bit. One of my dear writing friends sort of made it a challenge. To not spoil her book, let's just say the hero had a very interesting sexual background but he liked vanilla sex. And I said, "Wouldn't it be interesting to show the heroine that Kink, yes, with a capital K, can be arousing?" Hell, the heroine probably is kinky in her own little way. My writerly friend went Nope. Nope. Nope. And that's when my plot bunnies came out to play.

Because here's the thing, unconventional is such a vague word. Everyone would agree the missionary position is pretty basic and there's nothing kinky about it. Now let's take that the position, and place it in a roomful of people. Yes. You're doing the deed in the missionary position, but you have a roomful of people watching you. I'm sorry, that's kinky. Most folks don't invite an audience when they have sex. Most folks would probably suffer from performance anxiety and/or OMG-I'm-Naked-In-Front-Of-People. And for some people they would be incredibly aroused. They would prefer to have sex in a roomful of people.

And then you would have the sub-set of folks who would simply be aroused by the idea. Someone is watching you being pleasured (I know, a huge euphemism) and you really, really like that idea.

This particular kink has a name—exhibitionism.

That seems extreme. But this plot bunny went down a deep, dark hole and I found other things that would be considered kinks:

Role playing
Having sex in the tub or shower
Sex with a man (or woman) who has a beard
Having sex with more than one person i.e menages
Being tied up
Fellacio (If you don't know what that word means Google it.)
Foreplay
Geeks
Jocks
Massages
Nipple stimulation
Having sex with a man who is well-endowed

No. Seriously. The list goes on and on and on. BELIEVE ME. I researched it. These things can be kinks if you are unconventionally into it in a sexual way. And who exactly makes the rules of what conventional is? For some, if you require more than ten minutes of foreplay you're kinky. But these are all things you can find in an everyday romance novel. Hell, things we might like in the bedroom.

And they could very well be a kink.

Or, kink-lite as I call it in KFP. And that became the thing of this book, this heroine who is savvy and has explored—finding the roots or the foundation of what is considered conventional and making the logical kinky connection.

So, yeah, this is the fair warning. You will find clit spanking, erotic asphyxiation, exhibitionism and voyeurism in KILTED FOR PLEASURE. It's all very innocent and conventional the way it's written. And depending on who you ask, it can also be considered a kink.

What do you think a kink is?

Free and Coming Soon

Hey y'all! It's been ages since I chattered on here. I've been on a little writing siesta, but that doesn't mean grass has been growing under my feet. I have a new very short read coming out in the Den of Sin this month.

When your greatest enemy becomes your best lover…
Zora Riley’s intentions were to discover the scandalous story her rival dug up on The Beaudelaire. If the whispers were true then a five-star hotel in New Orleans transformed into a Den of Sin. Just the name of one famous attendant could make the rest of her career, and if Alastair planned to report the story first then she had to be the one to scoop him. It was only fair since he’d been taking her stories for the last six months. But when a heated argument with Alastair turns into a toe-curling interlude, she’s shaken to her core.
Alastair Halliday left Great Britain to make a name for himself in America, but he didn’t come to the Den for a story. Working for years in a dog-eat-dog environment, with insane hours, has left him needing something a little less refined and ambitious…something that will feed his kink. The Den’s winter masquerade ball will allow him to be anyone, someone whose work won’t get in the way of something simple and primal. That is until he kisses Zora, his most tempting rival.
When the weekend is over and the masks come off, will they go back to being enemies or will they stay lovers?
*This title will be out on the 18th.
But while you wait you can pick up most of the Den of Sin titles half off, if not more. Like Forbidden Rendezvous. Which is currently free at these retailers:

Debauching The Virgin

My new book is live! It's part of the Den of Sin series.

BLURB:
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Amelia Washington is a successful matchmaker to the rich with two failed engagements under her belt.

Amelia hasn’t had a man in her bed since she called a personal moratorium on relationships, and she’s been itching for a mattress tussle. She accepts an offer from The Den's kink orchestrator to pick a sexual companion for a week. Her temporary lover has a quick wit, lust for adventure and pure sexual magnetism. He’s perfect for a short, hot affair that leaves emotions out of the equation. He’s also willing to let her teach him how to please a woman. She’s bossy, high-handed and a bit uptight. How can she refuse?

Dwayne Blackstone is twenty-seven-year-old virgin.

He’s spent most of his adult life isolated, flying search and rescue missions as a bush pilot. When he has a brush with death, he’s determined to finally live his life to the fullest. The first step is definitely to lose his virginity. He wants Amelia to show him the art of seduction. She knows what she wants, and he’s a quick study. It’s not long before the student surpasses the teacher, and the simple but intimate experience turns into more than learning what makes Amelia moan.

The week they agreed to be lovers simply isn’t enough.

The Dirty Scot's Big Brother

Aye. The man you know as the Dirty Scot has a big brother. His name is Tristan. And his book is out!

***
Blurb
Keri Pearson is currently between jobs, so there's nothing to lose when her cousin promises her a glowing recommendation from a top expert in their field in exchange for a small favor. All she has to do is lie about who she is and pretend to be married to a charming Scot for three hours. Her sexy-as-hell pretend husband makes it too easy to play the part of newlyweds. The last thing she should do is trust him or the genuineness of his lust or adoration, but his touch ignites an unexpected desire.

Tristan Baird turned his back on his past with plenty of regrets, but when his brother blackmails him, Tristan can’t say no. Given his brother saved his neck, an afternoon doing what he does best doesn’t seem like too much to ask. And it’s for a good cause. Doing the job right guarantees his brother and new wife will have the home of their dreams. But his stunning accomplice complicates the job. She is everything he always wanted and couldn’t have. The kind of woman who is too smart to ever trust a former conman.

The three-hour commitment stretches into five sexually charged days as they fight the explosive connection. As each day passes, Keri must remind herself what is true and what is false, but the lines are blurring. Tristan can only hope his past doesn't come back to ruin their future.

New Den of Sin Release: As Sweet

We're gearing up for a new season of sin. Check out the latest from Holley Trent!
***
Rosalinda Gutierrez, the Hotel Beaudelaire’s night auditor, finds a beautiful bouquet of roses on her desk on Valentine’s Day. She quickly learns her secret admirer is someone she’s been quietly fantasizing about for several years. They’ve been two ships passing in the night: she works nights, and he works days.

Trevor Reed tends the five-star hotel’s grounds, and in his free time cultivates flowers nearly as stunning as Rosalinda. The unsophisticated gardener is pleasantly surprised the white-collar girl is receptive to his advances, and when she escalates their friendly date to an erotic fantasy, he figures she’ll want him only for the night.

Rosalinda has other things in mind. She likes men who can make things other than money, and Trevor’s quiet dominance pushes all the right buttons for her. She doesn’t care that he’s just a gardener, but now she has to make him believe it.

And now, today’s character sketch:
-------------------------------

Zion, Illinois, January 2010

I’m Diana Major McMahon. I’m 55 years old and am right back where I started: Zion, Illinois…and broke as the day I was born.

I was born here, but moved to St. Louis when I was 17. I was unmarried and pregnant, and every day I had to endure comments from my parents about how it was all my fault that they had to leave their home and friends behind. You see, the reason we moved wasn’t so much just because I was pregnant, but because I knew the baby was going to be biracial. My parents were beside themselves when I broke the news, worrying about what all their so-called friends would say once it became apparent that their daughter had spread her legs for a black guy. My mother even suggested they tell everyone I’d been raped…except one of our neighbors was a policeman and would have known about it. My father arranged for a job transfer, and to rent our house in Zion to a colleague, because it was their intent to return to there as soon as I could stand on my own two feet. They longed for that day. Never mind that they were merrily planning their return well before I even had a high school diploma.

I gave birth to my daughter, Sabrina, and then got my GED. I worked nights at a supermarket and studied when I could. Then I went to a technical school to learn computer programming, which was a hot profession back then. I’d been working for three months when my parents informed me they were going home. They helped me rent and furnish a one-bedroom apartment for Sabrina and me. They told me they’d be back to visit us when they could…in other words, don’t visit us; we’ll visit you. They still didn’t want their friends and neighbors to know they had a mixed-race granddaughter.

I resolved right then and there that I was going to make it. I was 22 with a 5-year-old daughter. I’d managed to have a sex life once I got out on my own, after Sabrina was in bed for the night. She never knew what went on after she was asleep; I didn’t want to expose her to a parade of lovers. Looking back, having sex with the knowledge that you could be discovered at any moment added to the excitement. With no bedroom of my own, my partner of the moment and I would do it in the bathroom or in the coat closet, and occasionally on the sofa, always half-dressed, always ready to spring to our feet if the door to Sabrina’s bedroom opened. I was always drawn to black guys; I’d never experienced sex with a man of my own race, but eventually I got tired of illicit relations with men who were always broke and had nothing else to offer me but a bottle of cheap wine and a hard dick. I knew guys who made nice salaries from work, but they were always married.

Then one day at the supermarket, Sabrina wandered away from me. I was frantic when I saw she was gone, and I rushed to the customer service desk to report it…and there she was, smiling and holding hands with a clean-cut, handsome, brown-haired man with a lock of hair that kept falling over one eye. His name was Larry McMahon. He hadn’t wanted to leave Sabrina until her mommy came to get her.

Larry was a rising financial star, an accounting director at a manufacturer. He asked us to lunch on the spot, and we went. I was thrilled at my good fortune. This good-looking, free-spending man was interested in me. Sabrina’s biracial heritage didn’t bother him at all. I soon learned that I needn’t have worried about him being able to satisfy my strong sex drive. Well-off, handsome, and a great lover…I was in heaven.

When he was promoted to corporate treasurer, he asked me to marry him. I hesitated, thinking of how wonderful my life could be: manicures, pedicures, facials, shopping, the gym, lunches with girlfriends. I didn’t want to tie myself down with diaper duty unless it was a deal-breaker. I told him that I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to have any more children due to some unspecified female problem, and that I didn’t think I was made to be an adoptive mother. He said not to worry, that he loved Sabrina like she was his own.

Sabrina asked me about her daddy as soon as she made friends who had two parents. I told her that he really hadn’t wanted us around, so it was just the two of us. I was so happy when Larry asked her if he could be her daddy. Heaven knew I couldn’t tell either Sabrina or Larry the real story…

Anyway, Larry and I got married, and he kept climbing the corporate ladder. Eventually he became the CFO of a beverage corporation. We lived the good life…a mansion in a pricey suburb…private school for Sabrina…wonderful vacations…furs…jewelry. I had a housekeeper and always drove a sleek late model car. How I gloated when my parents came for one of their rare visits.

The party continued for thirty years. Larry suffered some financial setbacks from investments that went south. He told me we needed to tighten our belts, and I tried, I really did. I honestly didn’t think it was that bad. He kept the magnitude of our financial situation hidden from me. It wasn’t until after he died that I found out just how bad things were, that the years of high living were over and that I’d been left with nothing.

So here I am, back in Zion. I hate to say it, but the best thing my mother did for me was pass away when she did. My father had died a few years earlier, and her passing meant Sabrina, her kids, and I would have a place to live. My brother, Mark, and I had never been close. He’s a college professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and didn’t want the house, which had been left to us jointly. The house is paid for, but Mark said if I wanted to live in it, I’d be responsible for taxes and upkeep.

I hadn’t worked in years, and jobs writing code aren’t nearly as plentiful as they used to be anyway. Sabrina was a trained LPN, and not only hadn’t she worked in years, she had never really warmed to the profession. Besides, not having an RN degree limited her earnings. Since both of us knew how to type, we got administrative positions at the largest employer in the area, Abbott Labs.

So I’ve gone from living the high life to barely eking out a living. I can’t remember the last time I bought something new for myself. There’s a possible way I can get my hands on some money, though. Now that I’m back in Zion, I’m hoping I can get the answer to the question I’ve been wondering about for 38 years…

Which one of the guys that I slept with in high school got me pregnant?

Excerpt: Under His Kilt

If you haven't caught my Tasty Blurb Tour, check it out. I'm giving away an $25 gift card. But you're here for an excerpt, right?

NSFW, but then again my hero, Ian, isn't ever safe for work.
****
“So, I've ruined you?”
Jocelyn didn't have to turn around to see the pleased smile. She couldn't let the egotistical comment stand. “Less you and more me, because all the stuff I've asked for were things I already fantasized about. I'll have to find someone else to do them with after you go. Teach someone else what I've learned about myself.” She grinned, practically seeing his annoyed expression. “You know, since the student has surpassed the teacher.”
“I can't have that then. I've got a reputation.”
She stilled at the low tone and closed her eyes. His voice was husky and a little bit raw. Ian only ever talked to her like that when they were naked. Hearing him now, like that, at work, felt like she'd brushed up against a live wire. Within seconds her panties were damp and her mouth dry. Damn.
It was inappropriate and grounds for firing to screw at work, but it was barely ten in the morning and waiting until five felt impossible. What had she turned into letting him have her in every way, in any way she asked for? A nympho, apparently. She tried to breathe through it and didn't turn around to him just yet. If she did and he looked like he was one swallow away from devouring her, all bets were off.
She handled the antique like a good curator was supposed to and let the quiet eat away at the anticipatory tension in the air. Jocelyn counted her steps back to the mannequin and knelt in front of it. Sucking in another breath, she placed the shoes on the stiff and lifeless feet. Shoes that cost way more than when they were made.
Her skin prickled. Ian was watching her progress or just watching her. In order to get through the ordeal and keep her hands steady, she told herself it was in a professional way. Professional curiosity. He just wanted to see how someone else in their field used ingrained techniques to dress inanimate objects with priceless and irreplaceable pieces of history.
He was not watching her because she was practically kneeling at his feet and he liked her in that position. Her kneeling would feed his desire to see her bend on his command. Ian wouldn't get off on the feeling of authority or power, but in her supplication. Nothing drove him over the edge faster than when she gave him permission to let go and do what he wanted. The whole exploration in his bedroom was about her and he never let her forget it.
Even though she told herself not to think about it, because fanning the flames only made the heat building at her core hotter, Jocelyn's imagination snagged on how she wanted him to do things she hadn't thought of yet. She was wet, already from the flirting with the thought of him being aroused. None of this would be an issue if he'd kept that tone under lock and key while they were at work. She finished dressing the shoes on the model, braced herself and stood to face him.
Damn.

It's Alive!

I'm so happy to announce that the Dirty Scot is live!

Jocelyn Pearson is determined to spend her last month as a twenty-something doing everything she's too busy or scared to try. Her imagination runs wild and then fixates on Ian Baird. He'll be working at the Langston Museum for a short stint as a consulting curator. He's Scottish. He believes sex is fun to be had. He's the perfect choice for a fling. She only has to get him break his rule about sleeping with co-workers. Seducing a man was on her bucket list...

Ian is no one's fool and knows exactly what Jocelyn wants—him. If she didn't work for the Langston Museum, he'd be more than happy to oblige any and every fantasy she desired, but she's the curator. She's sweet, inexperienced and well liked by everyone including the museum owner and director. Ian can't risk losing such an important contact for his consulting business. Not even when everything within in him craves a taste of her.

When Jocelyn sets her sights on him, there's no way Ian can deny her. They agree their affair will end in thirty days. No emotions, no entanglements, just sex. The closer the end date looms, they start to question if it's possible to walk away. They'll either have to come to terms of what they've become or stick to their original agreement.

The Making of a Cover: Under His Kilt

Some covers are incredibly easy to make. The stock photo is dang near perfect and I don't have to do much but crop it, play with the colors and then add my title and name. Font is key and that can take eons, but for the most part it's a day's worth of work.

Under His Kilt was not one of those covers. Let's start with talking about the lone and original stock photo. Since it's so not safe for work, I'll just say a man with a towel riding really low is, um...Yeah. So... the man needed a good shave before I could use it on a cover. I wanted the cover to convey this was an erotic romance, but not THAT much of an erotic romance (though it is pretty dirty). After spending hours photoshopping out pubic hair, I decided I still needed something to cover that area.

This is what I came up with.

By no means did I think this would be the final cover, but I had a core look. I wasn't a fan of all the red, but from all the black surrounding him any other color didn't quite work. I also needed to figure out how to get something with a tartan into the cover so it ties in with a title. But, this book could look like an erotic romance. A contemporary one at that, because we romance readers are hardwired to think Scottish = Historical.

I worked some more and came up with this:
I was ok with this and something or the other nagged me about the overall cover, but it was serviceable. I knew I'd revisit it the closer to the release date. The edits came in and I finished them. I got through my first round of proofing. There was no more waylaying the inevitable. I had to fix this cover. There was no way in hell I'd go with this as the final.

So less than a month before the release, I scratched that as the cover. The two goals I couldn't budge on is that it needed to look like an erotic romance and it needed to look like a contemporary.

I liked it but it was still missing something. Plus, his coloring looked off because of the light. Plus, nothing about it really said contemporary. At this point I did something drastic because I honestly couldn't see then potential of the cover. Let's just call it the attack of the blue-green alien.

Now if I were writing a paranormal this could be fine, but I wasn't. I give myself brownie points for the simple fact you'd be able to see this sucker in thumbnail (from space), along with the title and my name. Needless to say, I scraped this sucker.

And then I called on a friend in the middle of the night to help me. The idea well had run dry. I'd helped her create a draft of her own cover she wanted to use a comp. She suggested I used the same technique and coloring. I honestly had nothing to lose at this point. She punted the idea of having a bed or a night stand and that meant moving him over. Also, that damn tartan needed to get in there.

Now I'd gone a step too far to the left with his coloring, but I liked the idea of a woman instead of an object. It felt more personal. When you have a nekkid man in nothing but a towel you don't want him by a nightstand. Maybe a bed, but...you get the gist. Anyway, we were on to something. The woman didn't work because she didn't feel contemporary. She felt like a Geisha to me and ding, ding, ding that rings like a historical. We hit stock sites. At this point it was like 1/2 in the morning. So our emails were getting silly.

Finally, I did this:

And that was the last draft or I'd end up screaming for bloody murder. Plus, I absolutely loved it. It looks contemporary. It looks erotic. It haz tartan. Booyah!

So, that's how a cover is made. Sometimes, because if it was all the time I'd hire out.

*This book will be released on October 10th.

Update: Releases to Come and Such

To keep y'all in the loop, Double Trouble is off for betas and crits. So, it's getting there. Looks as though Melissa Blue won't have a release until October. That one will be Under His Kilt, a very erotic, dirty, filthy book and what I'm going to call book 2 in the Bad Boy Shorts series. And that means Double Trouble should have a Nov/Dec release.

So, what will you have to read until then? Well, you can try out my alter ego's alter ego, Sofia Harper. Her first release. (And, yes, that's why I'm talking in third person. I'm not THAT crazy.) Hot Knight In Paradise is somewhat like Double Dare, in that the romance is a nice, slow burn. You can check out for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Stranded in paradise with no way to get home, Leah Smith needs a miracle, and fast. Instead, she gets Marshall Jackson, surely the sexiest man alive. Too bad he's got an emotional wall around himself--and her only hope of getting off the island...

Marshall has a strict no damsels in distress policy, but there's something about Leah that makes him want to break his own rules. He agrees to let her work in his bar until she earns enough to get home. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to deny the scorching attraction between them. Soon hot island nights provide balm to their wounded souls, but will these two flawed exiles make peace with the past in time to claim the future they deserve together--or will paradise be lost?

The One I Want: Out Now (Mostly)

It's out! (For the most part.) (You can also check out the Pinterest board for this story. It has Idris. Yum.)

When Farrah Kane comes home from New York she doesn't plan to fall into bed with Micah Stamps. He's demanding, stubborn, her boss and...her best friend. Except she makes the mistake of agreeing to be his roommate as well as his co-worker for the next three months. It's not long before their days are filled with work and their nights filled with passion. The question is whether their friendship will survive the heat and his stubborn ways. She wants to take her time getting settled into home and their new relationship. He seems to have other plans in mind...

There's no getting around the fact that Micah's best friend makes his blood run hot. Their platonic relationship could die a slow death as far as he's concerned. The year she spent in New York made him realize two things: He missed his best friend more than he should have and he never wanted to live without her again. Now that she is in his grasp—in his home—for three months, there's no sense in waiting to take the next step. Micah only has to convince his impulsive friend to settle down with him.

Their work and home life brings out all the differences between them and drags them to the forefront. Their hearts get in the way of their their well-laid plans. Now, they have to figure out if it's possible to be friends now that they've become lovers.

The Chapter: Behind the Scenes

I've thought of a million things I could tell you about The One I Want. It's a failed Harlequin. All my books prior to this one came from characters, a piece of dialogue, a bigger picture I wanted to write. And, honestly, that's hard as hell to submit. (Yes, I wrote this book when I was still actively submitting to publishers.) This process of writing is pretty much looking at the book you wrote and trying to find the square peg it could possibly fit into, instead of the other way around. So, I came up with a friends-to-lovers story that could find a home with Harlequin, or anyone for that matter.

That's not enough for a blog post. So, I figured I'd talk about Alpha males and how I prefer Betas. Still, I ended up with about a paragraph of blog. And, really, my writing preference wouldn't tell you much about this story. It wouldn't give you a behind the scenes look.

So, I'm going to talk about The Chapter. The one I pretty much have in every book that's my favorite chapter. I could read that sucker out of context and still sigh or giggle or go Oooooooooh or restore my faith that I can write myself out of a brown paper bag.

In this book it's chapter six. During revisions, edits and proofing I could not wait until I got to this chapter. It's the chapter the characters kiss for the first time. Well, the first time they both remember, but that's a long story. Go with it. It's written from the Micah's POV. He's reached his breaking point when it comes to not touching Farrah like he wants to. It's the chapter I've pretty much nicknamed Shit Gets Real. Up until that point they are friends transitioning to lovers, but this chapter cleanly severs any doubt that they should be way more than friends.

I do not encourage skipping because you need all the book, but, uh, yeah, I won't be mad if you just skip to chapter six. (Psst. All the really dirty parts happen in chapter 10 and 13.)

Jesus Christ.
No wonder Ryan had a thing for her. She'd coaxed her hair into big, spiral curls that framed her heart-shaped face. Her rich, dark brown eyes were lit with a laugh that tugged her full mouth into a smile. Skin, just as dark brown as her eyes, looked soft and touchable. The simple black dress gave more than a hint of the femininity beneath. The silver heels elongated slender legs that had no end.
Tonight, and any night she went out on a blind date, Penelope looked like something he should bite just to have her taste fill his mouth. But he never did. Never would.
He spent a lot time with a lot of bad people. He always felt tainted by his life whenever he was around her. Although she didn't look it tonight, Penelope should be with someone who didn't own a set of lockpicks just in case a closed door needed to find itself conveniently opened.
Still, he couldn't help but flirt back like he'd done for the past two months. It was driving him a bit insane to not close the distance in the hallway and kiss her already. He persevered, leaning heavily on his doorjamb.
He needed a damn medal, both for restraint and stupidity. “What did the door do to make you go postal?”
“Not a thing. I'm just a rage-aholic. You should see how I rip into paper when I get on a tear.” She grinned at the intentional pun. “What are you doing home this late at night and stalking me?”
“Got a tip and was heading to a secret meeting. Stepped out and here you were destroying property with your head. I decided to announce my presence and make no sudden moves.”
“Oh.” Her shoulders slumped. “I won't hold you up then.”
He didn't want to leave. He never did whenever they had a moment alone. “My source is always late. I've got a few minutes to help defuse your rage.”
“It's nothing really.” She shrugged. “My roommate is convinced I should only date nice guys. I just came from another one of those disastrous dinners. You caught me in a moment of pure frustration.”
“Frustrated and angry.” He paused. “At yourself, your friend, or the date?”
She shook her head and the curls brushed along her face. “All of the above and I don't know why.”
He scoffed at her answer. “Yes, you do.”
She laughed softly. “Why do you think that?”
“Because I know human nature.” And that was the truth. Ryan had witnessed more than his fair share of it. “I see the seedier side, but it's all the same.”
Penelope made a noncommittal noise and then said, “Your job has left you all noir.”
“Somewhat.” Which was why Ryan kept his feet planted in his doorway. “Doesn't change the fact you're probably angry at yourself for going on another date. Angry at her for offering. And at him...don't know why. Probably a jackass. It's not rational, but it's human nature.”
“It's petty,” she argued.
“I repeat—human nature.”
She laughed as he'd known she would, and the sound did wonderful things to his spine. Stay against the doorjamb. Don't move. Not one goddamn step. “Ah, are you feeling better now? Will it be safe for me to leave my apartment, knowing it won't be torched?”
She bit the corner of her mouth to contain the flirtatious smile. “Your valuables will be safe from me.”
“My work here is done.” He felt safe that his craving for her had been fed and he wouldn't do anything stupid.
Ryan turned to close his door, and her heels clicked against the hard wood floors of the hallway. She was going inside. He'd sighed in relief from dodging another bullet, but when he faced her again, Penelope had closed some of the distance between them. Enough for him to know intimately her perfume had a light musk. The scent filled his head with nonsense about leaning down and slanting his mouth over hers.
She moved closer and her hand ate up the last of the distance. Light as a feather, her fingertips rested on his arm. If she kept them there one second longer, he'd do something dumb and irrevocable. It would lead down a road where he wouldn't take her rough, but he'd damn sure would take her every which way but loose.
She glanced up at him, mouth parted, about to speak. His gaze fixated on her bottom lip. Pink. Her mouth definitely looked like something he should bite into. Just once to get it out of his system. Her eyes widened and the sweetest, softest noise fell from her lips, but she didn't step back. Yeah. He shouldn't close the distance.
But...one time would be enough, right? He'd warn her off after that. If he had to, Ryan would pick Penelope up, dump her into her apartment, and make sure she'd lock the door tight to keep him out.

But...goddammit, just this once, he'd kiss her.

Bad Boy Next Door: Out Now

This short story should hold you over until the next release. It's short, steamy and full of banter.

After a lifetime of dating too many Mr. Nice Guys, Penelope Copeland is ready to shed her good girl persona. She's looking for a little adventure, with a sprinkle of fun and whole lot of naughty. Unfortunately, most bad boys won’t give her the time of day. They only see her as a sweet kindergarten teacher. Now, all she has to do is convince Ryan Pollard, her self-proclaimed bad-boy neighbor, that she's not as sweet as she looks.

Ryan Pollard is not one to follow conventional rules. His job as a crime reporter doesn't leave him with much use for them. Yet, he's managed to keep his relationship with Penelope platonic with just a hint of flirtation—until tonight. She says she wants an adventure, a walk on the dark side, and he's more than eager to give her one.

When their adventure takes a turn from playful to serious, Ryan and Penelope must choose between pretending the night never happened or embarking on the greatest adventure of all—love.

I Did It On Purpose

Before I put a book out I am very aware of what will turn some folks off. Now, Double Dare...sigh. I was on Southern Fried Chicas and we were talking about the romances we weren't fans of and another commenter mentioned how she hated the girlfriend romances. You know, the ones where it seems like it's really a love story between the X amount of friends. I totally commiserated because I've read those books before.

Soon after, guess what plot bunny came hopping along in my mind? A series with three best friends. Mind you, at this point in time I didn't write connected books. Lynne was a fluke, but Lynne is the kind of character that doesn't sit around quietly. I didn't want to write these books, but then Emma, Abigail and Sasha got to chattering in my head. I'm not exaggerating the chatter part. I figured if I ignored them they'd eventually fade and I could write a book that didn't have trouble written all over it from the get-go.

Weeks later they were still talking and driving me half insane so I decided to go with Emma's story first. She seemed sweet, uncomplicated and wouldn't it be funny if she's doing a naked dare? Boom, right out of the gate I'd have her meet the hero. And I always wanted to write a pastry baker. Even had a story sitting around my harddrive, that never worked, that would be a perfect starting point.

And then I started to write it and ten pages later Emma, Sasha and Abigail were still talking. I kid you not. Even the folks who ended up with those first drafts had to suffer through six pages of chatter. Nothing broken up with narration, but six pages of dialogue.

So, needless to say Double Dare has the most chatter of the three friends. Yes, it's absolutely a romance between Tobias and Emma. I play on the fact that in any given scene with the three woman together Emma's the normal one who could easily be the wallflower. I made sure whenever the three woman are together and Tobias is there, all he can see is Emma. And in a much more profound way all she can see is him. Her friends fade to the background.

Yes, I did that on purpose. I made her friends a huge part of her world. Really, out of the three books this is the most stage time all three woman have on the page. Because the thing is Emma is all about family. Not by blood but the one she chose. She's the one they all turn to. She may not be the loudest, the most extravagant, the sexiest or the most obscene. She's the quiet one, that you should totally look out for by the way. And Tobias needed a family.

This may drive folks nuts. This may make them go, Emma who? when all three are together doing their usual shenanigans, but I promise you when it's just her and Tobias...well, you know it's them in their own world.

So if you hate this kind of romance steer clear. No, seriously, the chatter may drive you nuts. You may fall in love with Sasha or Abigail first and rather have their stories. They have that kind of flair. Their books will come out so you'll just have to wait. Just know Emma is the foundation of this world. That kind of person is quiet, unassuming, interesting once you really get to know them. And I totally did that on purpose.

Release Frenzy And A New Book

I'm about to propel myself into another release frenzy. Down With Cupid is slated to come out in a few days. Along with the bundled versions of all of my Down With Cupid Shorts. I'll be rocking in a corner in no time, sipping on cognac.

But right now, right this second (or after I finish writing this post) I'll be heading back to a story I've been wanting to write for ages. One reason or another, it's been put on the back burner. What story you ask?

Tony's story i.e. Everything He Dreamed.

Me = Hog heaven.

So, I'm adding to the story board I've got on Pinterest.

I repeat: Me = hog heaven.
